GSA gives mattress manufacturers one month to recall substandard products
The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has directed mattress manufacturing companies recently shut down for producing substandard products to withdraw their mattresses from the market within one month or face further regulatory action.
Speaking to the media, the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the GSA, Clement Kubati, disclosed that the affected companies had been formally notified to undertake an immediate product recall as part of efforts to protect consumers.
“The mattress issue, I'm sure some of you have asked. What I can say for the mattresses for now is that we have written to all the mattress manufacturing companies that we have locked down to do a product recall. We've given them one-month notice to do that,” he said.
Mr. Kubati assured the public that the Authority remains vigilant and continues to monitor compliance with standards across the country.
“I'm using this opportunity to send a signal to Ghanaians that we have not gone to sleep. We are still on the ground, and we are monitoring. We promote trade to protect consumers,” he added.
The directive follows a joint enforcement operation carried out by the GSA and the Police SWAT Team on May 18 and 19, 2026, at Afienya and Dawhenya in the Greater Accra Region.
The exercise resulted in the closure of six mattress manufacturing companies found to be producing substandard products in violation of established standards.
The operation formed part of ongoing compliance measures initiated in October 2025, when the affected firms were ordered to halt production and address regulatory breaches. The companies were subsequently shut down after failing to comply with the directives.
According to the GSA, investigations and laboratory analysis of product samples revealed that the manufacturers were using polystyrene materials in the production of mattresses instead of approved materials required under industry standards.
The affected companies include Jin Yuan Jia Mattress Manufacturing Plant, Monda Ghana Mattresses, ZXZ Company Limited, Rockfoam Mattress, and 5A Home Company.
The Authority says it will continue to enforce standards and take the necessary steps to ensure that products sold on the market meet safety and quality requirements.
