'What power do you have to collapse NPP you did not build?' – Awal Mohammed jabs Ken Agyapong
A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Awal Mohammed, has reacted to recent comments made by former flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, offering a detailed rebuttal on internal party history and the ongoing tensions within the NPP.
In a social media post, Awal addressed what he described as misconceptions about the party’s origins and Mr. Agyapong’s place within its political tradition.
He stated that Mr. Agyapong was not among the founding members of the NPP when it was established in 1991.
“Again, in 1991 when the NPP was formed, Kennedy Agyapong as an adult then was not one of the founding members of the party,” he said.
He also questioned suggestions of historical family ties to the party’s early formation.
“From the UGCC to the UP tradition, there is no history of Kennedy Agyapong’s family members being founders,” he added.
According to him, Mr. Agyapong later joined the party and progressed through its ranks like any other member.
“He joined later, just like any ordinary member,” he stated.
Awal further referenced Mr. Agyapong’s long tenure as Member of Parliament for Assin Central, claiming that internal contestations over the seat had at times been met with resistance.
“At points when individuals expressed interest in contesting the seat, he used threats and insults against the national party,” he alleged.
He also suggested that the former MP had benefited significantly from successive NPP administrations over the years.
Turning to recent criticisms, Awal responded to Mr. Agyapong’s claims regarding the Afari Military Hospital, which the former MP has cited as an example of uncompleted government projects.
“Now, you have come out using lies to attack the party, claiming we did nothing at the Afari Hospital,” he said.
He noted that party figures in Parliament, including Dr. Ayew Afriyie, Co-Chair of the Health Committee, had already addressed the issue publicly.
Awal also reacted to what he described as veiled threats about the party’s electoral fortunes.
“You are threatening the party just because they exposed your lies,” he said.
He questioned Mr. Agyapong’s influence over the party’s future prospects.
“What power do you think you have to collapse a party you did not build?” he asked.
He concluded by asserting that President Akufo-Addo’s record in public service remains free of scandal, contrasting it with the criticisms being made within the ongoing debate.
