Let us lay down the weapons of internal warfare — Bryan Acheampong to NPP members

Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Dr Bryan Acheampong, has called for calm and unity within the opposition party amid renewed internal tensions following post-primary disagreements.

The appeal comes after former flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong renewed criticism of elements within the party and threatened to expose internal issues.

Dr Acheampong, who also contested in the party’s January 2026 flagbearer race, said the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general election should serve as a reminder of the need for reconciliation and collective rebuilding.

In a social media statement shared on Friday, June 19, he urged members to prioritise the party’s survival and electoral recovery over individual grievances.

“I speak to you today not as a bystander to our recent contest, but as one who stood in it. Like Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, I offered myself to our delegates in the January primary, and like him, I did not emerge the winner,” he said.

He added that the party’s focus must now shift from internal disputes to rebuilding ahead of the 2028 elections.

“Our party suffered a painful defeat in 2024. The single most important task before us between now and 2028 is to rebuild, to reunite, and to return to power. Nothing — no grievance, no provocation, no personal quarrel — can be allowed to stand above that mission,” he stated.

Dr Acheampong acknowledged recent tensions triggered by remarks from Mr Agyapong, who has been critical of the party leadership and hinted at revealing further internal issues in July 2027.

He, however, urged the former Assin Central MP to help reduce tensions and contribute to unity efforts within the party.

Dr Acheampong also noted that while grievances exist, some of the internal attacks directed at Mr Agyapong during and after the primaries were unacceptable and should have been addressed by party leadership.

He stressed that responsibility for such comments should not be attributed to the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, or the broader leadership structure.

“It would be a grave error to allow the misconduct of a few to be charged to the account of our flagbearer, or worse, to our entire party,” he said.

“Let us lay down the weapons of internal warfare. Action the verb UNITY. And let us close ranks behind our flagbearer so that in 2028 we restore the New Patriotic Party to the service of the people of Ghana,” he added.
