NPP’s Martin Ampim predicts internal storm over Governs Agbodza’s rising popularity

The Biakoye Constituency Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Martin Ampim, has suggested that the Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Governs Kwame Agbodza, could face internal political challenges in the coming months due to what he describes as growing perceptions of presidential ambition.

Speaking on the Bubune Morning Show on Bubune 91.7 FM in Tapa Abotoase, hosted by Nana Yaw Asiamah, Mr. Ampim argued that the Roads Minister’s increasing popularity and visible achievements could attract strong opposition and sabotage from individuals within political circles who may view him as a potential rival.

According to Mr. Ampim, public admiration for the minister’s performance could heighten political tensions among persons believed to harbour similar ambitions for the country’s highest office.

He further alleged that both the Roads Minister and the Finance Minister, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson, may have presidential aspirations — a situation he believes could create friction within government circles and potentially affect the Roads Minister’s performance.

“I want to commend the Minister for the work he is doing. Former Roads Ministers also played their part in the past. However, the more Ghanaians praise the Roads Minister for his achievements, the more likely it is that those with similar ambitions may seek to undermine him,” Mr. Ampim stated.

He added:

“I am sure you have heard names being mentioned as possible successors to President John Dramani Mahama, including Eric Opoku, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ato Forson, and Julius Debrah. In my view, the Roads Minister may soon come under pressure from within.”

Mr. Ampim also cautioned that sustained political pressure could force the minister to become more cautious in his decision-making, potentially affecting his influence and effectiveness within government.

His comments were made during a discussion on national politics and governance on the Bubune Morning Show on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, while panelists examined President Mahama’s directive for value-for-money assessments of major government contracts.
