WORLD CUP OF CHAOS: As FIFA Fails To Kick Toxic Politics & Racism Out

Introduction
Football is supposed to unite people all over the world, but this World Cup of 2026 which is being jointly hosted by the United States of America (US), Canada and Mexico has been tainted by racism, toxic politics and injustice making it one of the most disappointing world cup tournaments ever.

Story Of Omar Abdulkadir Artan
A Somali referee acclaimed as the best in Africa was denied entry to the United States to officiate World Cup games as a football referee. This comes on the back of Omar Abdulkadir Artan, being named Africa's best referee for 2025 at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards in November.

"Omar Artan has made Somalia and the entire people of the African Continent, extremely proud", (1).Dr Patrice Motsepe, CAF president, said.

Artan, who was set to be the first Somalian to referee at the World Cup finals, was dropped from the list of officials after he was denied entry to the US.US authorities cited "security reasons", "fears of links to terrorism" for denial of Omar entrance in the US. And International Federation Of Football Associations (FIFA)said,

"Fifa can confirm that match official Omar Abdulkadir Artan will be unable to train and officiate at the Fifa World Cup 2026 after he was denied entry into the United States....Fifa is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed by authorities that Mr Artan's status will not be changed at present". (2)

Reaction & Outrage
Ian Wright had this to say,
"I just read that the Somalian referee has been denied entry. Every few hours it’s another story about fans denied, players denied, officials denied, journalists denied. Now refs?!" (3)

"Is this how the host behave, really? For the greatest game, the greatest tournament in the world - is this how the hosts behave? Do you know who I feel for? I feel for the American fans who are desperate for this tournament. How embarrassing for them this must be. *This is the World Cup of chaos......" (Ibid), Ian Wright former Arsenal & England striker.

Jose Mourinho, one of the most successful and respected top manager of modern football pointed out that FIFA should be blamed for the tournament drama after Omar Artan was denied entry into the US.

“We need to blame FIFA for all this drama. Why take a precious tournament to a country that’s not traditionally known for football passion in the same way, and then have all these issues with people getting denied entry? This must be shaping up to be one of the most *chaotic and boring World Cups ever ". (4), Jose Mourinho, one of the greatest football managers of our time.

"The World Cup is supposed to represent the entire football world. Every continent, every nation, every culture. That's what makes it special. The moment politics starts determining who can participate and who cannot, football loses part of its identity. I've always believed that FIFA's responsibility is to protect the integrity of the game. Fans don't buy tickets to watch politics. They buy tickets to watch football", (5).

"If football authorities allow political disputes to become part of tournament selection and participation, where does it stop? The World Cup should be remembered for great matches, unforgettable goals and incredible stories, not for controversies surrounding who was allowed to take part. Football has enough rivalries on the pitch. We don't need political rivalries deciding what happens off it as well " (ibid), Thiery Henry, former Arsenal striker.

Former FIFA President raise a crucial observation to the whole saga when he pinpointed out that,

"No-one is more official than the referee, and if a country refuses to allow a referee in, the world cup should not be held in such a country, (6), Sepp Blatter.

Such a serious observation casts doubt on the independency of FIFA as a footballing body.

Former US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Tibor Nagy said,

"It is absolutely ridiculous for a country to bid for and accept the responsibility of hosting a World Cup, only to deny entry to participants, officials, referees, journalists, and fans from certain nations",

adding that,
"a country cannot host a global event and then selectively exclude people based on where they come from. If some countries and their citizens are treated differently from others, then the principles of fairness, equality, and inclusion that sport is supposed to uphold are being undermined" (7)

Former Labour leader and British politician Jeremy Corbyn called out on America’s racism, exposing the shameful treatment of Somali referee Omar Artan, describing it, as

"An absolute disgrace. This is racism, plain and simple. Shameful" , (8).

Gary Neville weighed in,
"It is absolutely ridiculous that he wasn't allowed to enter the country. Right now, I am sitting here with the Statue of Liberty behind me, and I don’t think he feels much freedom in this country at the moment. I really do not know why FIFA did not intervene more aggressively in this Somali referee case", (9), Gary Neville , former Manchester United defender.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus offered his solidarity to Somali referee Omar Artan saying,

"Omar Artan didn’t just make the FIFA World Cup, he made history as the first Somali referee to get there, and as Africa’s best. That milestone stands no matter what... So sorry to see this, Omar. You reached the summit of your profession and inspired a generation back home just by getting there, and being kept off the pitch you earned doesn’t change that", (10), Ghebreyesus said through US social media company X.

The Biting Discrimination & Exclusion
Omar Artan does not represent only himself; he represents Somalia, he represents Africa. Africa stands tall, strong and proud of one of Africa's finest referees, whose World Cup dream was shattered because sportsmanship was overcome by toxic politics and racism. Fairness thrown out of the window of some geopolitical ulterior agendas. Omar Artan’s journey is more than a personal achievement—it is a symbol of hope for an entire nation and entire continent. Through dedication, sacrifice, and excellence, Omar Artan carried the Somali flag and African flag with pride and honor on the international stage. Millions of Africans see themselves in his success. FIFA should have ensured that fairness, respect, and equal opportunity remain at the heart of football, sadly, this was not the case. Football belongs to everyone, and stories like Omar Artan inspire future generations of young Somalis, young Africans to dream beyond limits. Denying Artan is denying young Somalis and young Africans to dream big. Football is meant to bring people together across borders, not become a tool for discrimination and exclusion. Its called the 'World Cup' for a reason. Denying a visa to a qualified Somali referee is an insult to the entire continent of Africa. Respect the game, respect the fans and respect all nations.

All this fiasco begs the question whether FIFA has been captured by some agendas. Some football observers and pundits were quick to lay blame on the FIFA President, Gianni Infantino for remaining silent, and his failure to speak out against this injustice. To them, this is not only a demonstration of a complete lack of courage and leadership at a time when football’s core values are under attack, but evidence of a football body hijacked by some political forces.

"He is a disgrace, that fella (Gianni) Infantino- I can't stand him.I really have a big problem with him", (11), Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender.

If a FIFA certified referee can be denied entry simply because he is Somali, then the spirit of the World Cup is being undermined. It sends a message that the country is unwilling to fully respect the structure of football itself. If a nation refuses to accept the official who represents the rules of the game, then it creates a serious problem for FIFA and for world football.Blatter’s words that a referee is the most highest official of football highlight a simple but powerful truth about football,

"the referee is the highest symbol of official authority on the pitch. No match can be considered fair, organized, or legitimate without the presence and power of the referee. The referee is the person trusted to protect the rules, control the game, and make sure every team competes under the same conditions. That is why blocking a referee from entering a country cannot be treated as an ordinary decision".

That is why the World Cup should only be hosted in a country that respects the complete system of the football sport.Stadiums and money are not enough.Respect for referees, rules, and fairness must come first.

US- Somalia Relationship: A Case Of Geopolitical & Immigration Friction

Since the Battle of Mogadishu, pitting elite US forces and Somali militia fighters on October 3-4, 1993, where the US faced a major military, tactical and political humiliation (widely known as "Black Hawk Down"). The US-Somalia relationship though maintaining a vital security and diplomatic partnership, has been marred by geopolitical and immigration friction. Enter the current US administration's strict US immigration policy, further straining of an already strained relationship has been the outcome. In early 2026, the US Department of Homeland Security moved to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalis in the US.What followed has been high-profile visa denials and hostile rhetoric from the US administration.

Somalia features on President Trump's travel ban list and is on record for saying,"they're all crooks", of Somali immigrants in America. Current US President Donald Trump is on record for repeatedly and harshly disparaging Somalia and Somali immigrants, describing Somalia as "barely a nation" and the "worst in the world". Trump has repeatedly stated that Somalia "stinks" pointing to non-functional government, military, police, or structure, famously stating , "Somalia is not even a country". Dismissing Somali immigrants in the US and their advocates, as "garbage". Trump is also on record for attacking naturalized US citizen, Somali-American US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar labeling her and her political friends as "garbage".Trump has accused the Somali-American community in the US of stealing billions of dollars and contributing absolutely nothing to American society.

Conclusion
The Omar Artan story is disturbing and deeply troubling. In as much as the US has every right to protect its borders and pursue its immigration policy, politics should not be dragged into football and football should not be a pitch for politics. This is the official position of FIFA, no room for politics in football. But what is this now? Turning the world cup tournament into a geopolitical weapon is not only wrong but immoral. Sport as a tool should be used for social integration, unifying people and source of enjoyment and hope. Politics in football acts against the principles of fairness and equality in sport. Football stands for fairness, equality, and opportunity. Omar Artan's sad story is a classic example of football being turned into a political pitch. This is defeat for sports fairness. Players, referees, and fans around the world should stand in solidarity with Omar Artan and speak out against this grave injustice and unfair exclusion.Surely, amidst all this drama, one is left with a question, Was the decision to deny Omar Artan entrance in the US to officiate world cup football matches purely about the football game or political game?
