BECE graduate feared dead after drowning in River Osen
A 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination graduate is feared dead after reportedly drowning in the River Osen at Twifo Edugya in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region following heavy rainfall in the area.
The victim, identified as Alfred Kumi, a Junior High School graduate from Gomoa Ohua in the Gomoa West District, is believed to have entered the river to bathe while visiting Twifo Edugya.
According to reports, Alfred had travelled to the community to visit his father and seek financial support to continue his education after completing his BECE examinations. However, he failed to return home, raising concerns among relatives and residents.
After he was reported missing for two days, a search operation was launched by the Twifo Atti-Morkwa office of the National Disaster Management Organisation. The operation is being led by the District Director, James Pra, with support from the NADMO rescue team and traditional authorities.
The search for Alfred Kumi’s body is ongoing in the River Osen.
Speaking to the media, Mr Pra blamed many river related tragedies on illegal sand winning activities along water bodies. He said the practice creates deep pits and hidden dangers that pose serious risks to people using the rivers.
“They are setting traps for people to die in rivers,” he said.
Mr Pra also appealed to the Regional and National offices of NADMO to provide life jackets and other rescue equipment to strengthen the capacity of district rescue teams and improve emergency response operations.
