GMET forecasts widespread rain, thunderstorms across Ghana today

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall of varying intensity across several parts of the country today, Thursday, June 11, 2026, with late afternoon and evening storms expected to affect many communities, particularly within the forest and transition zones.

According to GMet’s latest 24-hour impact-based weather forecast issued by its Central Analysis and Forecasting Office, many areas are expected to experience thunderstorms or rain during the morning hours. Mist and fog patches are also likely to form in parts of southern Ghana, potentially reducing visibility for motorists and commuters.

The agency indicated that conditions will gradually improve during the day, with periods of sunshine and cloud cover expected in many locations. However, thunderstorms and rain are forecast to redevelop from late afternoon into the night, especially across forest and transition belt communities.

In the coastal sector, Takoradi and Axim are expected to record the highest likelihood of morning thunderstorms, with a 60 per cent chance of occurrence. Accra, Kasoa, Cape Coast and Koforidua are also expected to experience rainfall during the morning, while Aflao is likely to remain mostly cloudy.

Within the forest zone, Kumasi, Obuasi and Akim Oda are forecast to experience morning rainfall, followed by thunderstorms later in the day. Ho and Koforidua are expected to enjoy sunny intervals in the afternoon before thunderstorms develop in the evening.

Communities in the transition zone, including Sunyani, Techiman and Goaso, are likely to experience thunderstorms both in the morning and evening, with sunny periods expected during the day.

In the northern sector, Bolgatanga and Nalerigu face the highest probability of morning thunderstorms nationwide, estimated at 60 per cent. Tamale, Yendi and Wa are also expected to experience rain or thunderstorms during the morning before conditions become partly sunny later in the day.

Temperatures across the country are expected to remain moderate, with minimum temperatures ranging between 22°C and 23°C. Maximum temperatures are forecast to range from 30°C along parts of the coast to as high as 34°C in portions of the transition and northern zones.

GMet further warned that sea conditions remain rough and issued a Level 2 advisory for marine activities. Fishermen, canoe operators and other users of the sea have therefore been advised to exercise caution.

The agency urged the public, particularly residents in areas prone to flooding, to remain alert and take the necessary precautions as thunderstorms and rainfall could trigger localized flooding, strong winds and reduced visibility on roads.

The forecast, issued at 0500 GMT, was signed by Duty Forecaster Nancy Frimpong Asare. GMet encouraged the public to continue monitoring its official communication channels for updates and any changes to the weather outlook.
