Savelugu MCE leads Ghana–Italy partnership for landmark waste‑to‑energy plant

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Savelugu, Hon. Alhassan Fuseini, has taken a bold step to tackle sanitation challenges and advance sustainable development in the Northern Region by securing a strategic partnership with Trentino Ambiens, an Italian waste management firm, for the establishment of a modern waste treatment plant in Savelugu.

The initiative, conceived by the Savelugu Municipal Assembly under the leadership of Hon. Fuseini, aims to transform the municipality’s waste management system by converting waste into valuable resources such as gas and electricity. The facility will serve Savelugu and neighbouring districts including Nanton, Kumbungu, Karaga, and parts of the Tamale Metropolis.

Motivated by a vision to improve environmental sanitation and promote green energy solutions, Hon. Fuseini led the preparation and submission of a formal proposal to Trentino Ambiens, outlining the urgent need for an efficient waste management system that addresses sanitation concerns while creating economic opportunities for local communities.

Before engaging the Italian company, the Savelugu Municipal Assembly passed a resolution at a General Assembly meeting approving the acquisition of the waste treatment plant—demonstrating the Assembly’s commitment to innovative, long‑term solutions to the region’s waste management challenges.

Following the approval, Hon. Fuseini spearheaded a series of engagements between Assembly officials and representatives of Trentino Ambiens. These discussions covered the technical, operational, and financial dimensions of the project and culminated in an invitation for a Ghanaian delegation to visit Italy for further consultations and formalization of the partnership.

Recognizing the transformative potential of the project, the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, joined the effort and subsequently led a high‑powered delegation to Italy. The team included Hon. Fuseini, the Savelugu Municipal Coordinating Director, the Municipal Director of Planning, the District Chief Executive for Nanton, Hon. Abdul Rahman Zenabu Rosina, and the Nanton District Coordinating Director.

During the visit, Hon. Fuseini participated in a series of technical meetings with Trentino Ambiens officials, where detailed discussions were held on the implementation framework, expected benefits, and sustainability of the proposed facility. The delegation also gained firsthand insights into the company’s waste‑to‑energy technology and its potential impact on the Northern Region.

A major highlight of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ghanaian delegation and Trentino Ambiens. Hon. Fuseini signed on behalf of the Savelugu Municipal Assembly, reaffirming the municipality’s commitment to the project. The Northern Regional Minister signed on behalf of the regional authorities, while the Nanton DCE signed for the Nanton District Assembly.

Speaking after the ceremony, Hon. Fuseini described the project as a “game‑changing intervention” that will significantly improve sanitation, create jobs, and contribute to sustainable energy production across the beneficiary districts.

He explained that the facility will receive and process waste from Savelugu, Nanton, Kumbungu, Karaga, and parts of Tamale, converting it into gas and electricity through modern waste treatment technology. This, he said, will reduce environmental pollution while boosting local economic development.

Hon. Fuseini added that the project aligns with the government’s broader agenda of promoting environmental sustainability, improving public health, and advancing green industrialization. He emphasized that the initiative positions Savelugu as a leader in innovative waste management practices in Ghana.

As part of the next phase, a technical team from Trentino Ambiens is expected in Savelugu in July 2026 to inspect the proposed project site and conduct the necessary assessments ahead of construction.

The MCE expressed gratitude to the Northern Regional Minister for his unwavering support and to all stakeholders who contributed to the successful signing of the MoU.

The establishment of the waste treatment plant is poised to become one of the most significant environmental and energy projects in the Northern Region. Through the leadership of Hon. Alhassan Fuseini and the collaboration of local and international partners, the project promises lasting gains in sanitation, energy generation, job creation, and environmental sustainability for the people of Savelugu and the wider region.
