Birim North DCE unveils ambitious five-year development agenda

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Birim North, Hon. Abdul Hakeem Antwi, has outlined an ambitious five-year development agenda aimed at transforming the district into one of the most economically vibrant and progressive areas in the country.

The vision, which focuses on economic growth, infrastructure development, education, healthcare, youth empowerment and good governance, seeks to improve the living conditions of residents while unlocking the district's vast development potential.

Speaking in an interview, Hon. Antwi said his administration was committed to ensuring that development was reflected in the daily lives of the people through improved access to jobs, social services and economic opportunities.

"We cannot speak of progress when young people remain unemployed, when farmers struggle to access markets, or when communities lack basic infrastructure. Development must be felt in every household and every community," he said.

According to the DCE, agriculture remains the backbone of the district's economy and will be a major focus of his administration's development strategy.

He explained that plans were underway to support farmers with improved extension services, enhanced access to agricultural inputs, irrigation facilities and stronger market linkages to increase productivity and incomes.

Hon. Antwi said the district would also promote value addition and agro-processing to create jobs and stimulate local industrial growth.

"The future of Birim North lies in transforming our agricultural strengths into industrial opportunities. We must process what we produce and create value within our communities," he stated.

On infrastructure, the DCE identified road development as a key priority, particularly roads linking farming communities to commercial centres.

He noted that improved road networks would facilitate trade, improve access to healthcare and education, and contribute significantly to the district's overall economic development.

Education, he said, would also receive significant attention under his administration.

The DCE indicated that the assembly would work with relevant government institutions, development partners and stakeholders to improve educational infrastructure, strengthen teacher support systems and promote digital learning initiatives across the district.

Hon. Antwi further highlighted youth empowerment as a critical component of his development agenda.

He said vocational training, entrepreneurship programmes and skills development initiatives would be expanded to equip young people with the knowledge and competencies needed to take advantage of emerging economic opportunities.

"Our young people are not liabilities; they are our greatest assets. When we invest in their talents and abilities, we invest in the future of Birim North," he stressed.

The DCE also pledged to improve healthcare delivery by strengthening health infrastructure and expanding access to quality healthcare services, particularly in underserved rural communities.

On governance, Hon. Antwi underscored the importance of transparency, accountability and citizen participation in decision-making.

He said his administration would deepen engagement with traditional authorities, religious leaders, civil society organisations and community groups to promote collective ownership of development initiatives.

The DCE further advocated sustainable development practices that balance economic growth with environmental protection, noting that preserving natural resources was essential for the welfare of future generations.

While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Hon. Antwi expressed confidence that strategic partnerships, prudent resource management and active community participation would accelerate development across the district.

"We are not merely planning for the next year or two. We are building a foundation that future generations will benefit from," he said.

He expressed optimism that the successful implementation of the development agenda would position Birim North as a model district for inclusive growth and sustainable development in the Eastern Region and the country at large.
