Residents raise alarm over dilapidated building in Osu
Residents of Osu in Accra are calling on government authorities and relevant agencies to take immediate action over a dangerously damaged building that remains occupied despite showing visible signs of structural weakness.
According to community members, the building, which is located in a busy section of the suburb, has deteriorated significantly over the years. Cracks can reportedly be seen on several parts of the structure, while portions of the building appear unstable, raising fears that it could collapse at any moment.
The concerns come at a time when public attention has been drawn to the issue of unsafe buildings following recent incidents of building collapses in parts of Accra. Many residents say those unfortunate incidents should serve as a wake-up call for authorities to identify and address structures that pose a threat to lives and property before disaster strikes.
According to the voice behind the video, people living around have been advised to vacate the building but have refused to leave.
Residents are urging officials from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and other relevant institutions to conduct an urgent structural assessment of the building and take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of occupants and the surrounding community.
Some residents believe that occupants may be unaware of the full extent of the danger, while others suspect economic challenges may be preventing them from relocating. Regardless of the circumstances, community leaders insist that safety must remain the top priority.
