A few minutes on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, or even a WhatsApp group is enough to encounter a stream of health advice. One post recommends a herbal mixture for diabetes. Another promotes a natural remedy for hypertension. A video claims to cleanse the body of toxins. In the comments section, dozens of people share their experiences, with some describing remarkable improvements in their health. This is no longer a fringe phenomenon. For many people, social media has become an important source of health information, offering access to experiences, opinions, and advice from across the world at the touch of a screen.

There is much to appreciate about this shift. Health information has never been more accessible. Individuals are increasingly seeking information, asking questions, and taking a more active interest in their wellbeing. Yet the abundance of information has also created a new challenge. In the same digital space, evidence-based guidance can appear alongside personal testimonies, commercial promotions, and unverified claims, often making it difficult to distinguish one from the other.

Why It Matters: The Promise and the Perils of Social Media Health Tips

The World Health Organization has a name for today's health information environment: an "infodemic". The term refers to the overwhelming volume of information circulating online, where accurate advice often competes with misleading claims, commercial promotions, and personal opinions. In such an environment, finding reliable health information can be as challenging as finding information itself.

Yet social media's growing role in health should not be viewed only through the lens of risk. For many people, platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and WhatsApp have become accessible sources of health information. They simplify complex topics, provide practical explanations, and enable people to learn from others' experiences. Studies show that information found online is influencing real-world decisions, from improving diet and increasing physical activity to encouraging people to seek medical attention and ask more informed questions during consultations.

But accessibility is not the same as accuracy.

Unlike hospitals, universities, or public health agencies, social media has few barriers to entry. A medical specialist, a nutritionist, a celebrity, a business owner, and an ordinary user can all appear side by side in a person's feed, often speaking with equal confidence. Researchers have noted that health and nutrition content is increasingly shaped not only by professionals but also by influencers, bloggers, and commercial actors, making it harder for audiences to distinguish between evidence and opinion, and between marketing and education.

The stakes can be high. A misleading post may persuade someone to spend money on an unproven product, delay seeking medical care, or abandon an effective treatment. Health claims that spread rapidly online can travel far beyond the communities where they originated, reaching audiences with little ability to verify their accuracy.

Nutrition offers a clear example. While social media has created new opportunities for nutrition education, researchers have also found that constant exposure to diet, food, and body-image content can shape perceptions of health in unhealthy ways. A recent study found that individuals who frequently engaged with such content reported higher levels of disordered eating symptoms, highlighting the influence these messages can have on behaviour.

What makes the challenge particularly complex is that misleading information does not always look misleading. It may come wrapped in a compelling personal story, a dramatic before-and-after image, or hundreds of comments from people claiming positive results. On platforms designed to reward attention, popularity can sometimes be mistaken for credibility. This is why public health experts increasingly argue that access to trustworthy health information is itself a determinant of health. In the digital age, the ability to evaluate a health claim may be almost as important as the claim itself.

A Few Questions Before You Follow That Advice

Not every health tip shared online is wrong. In fact, some may be useful, evidence-based, and shared with good intentions. The challenge is that it is often difficult to tell the difference.

Before acting on health advice found on social media, it is worth asking a few simple questions. Who is providing the information? Are they sharing a personal experience, promoting a product, or offering professional advice? Is evidence provided, or is the claim based solely on testimonials and before-and-after stories?

It is also important to remember that what works for one person may not work for another. Age, genetics, medical history, medications, lifeclass, and underlying health conditions can all influence how individuals respond to a treatment, supplement, herb, or diet. This is one reason why healthcare decisions are based on evidence gathered from many people rather than the experiences of a single individual.

Health professionals also caution against self-prescribing remedies based solely on online recommendations. Many viral health tips provide little information about dosage, side effects, drug interactions, or who should avoid the product altogether. Some remedies may be harmless, while others may worsen existing conditions, interfere with prescribed medications, or delay access to appropriate treatment.

The growing popularity of artificial intelligence tools and internet search engines introduces another layer of complexity. While these tools can help people find information quickly, the information they generate is not always accurate, complete, or applicable to every individual or setting. Health advice that may be appropriate in one country, healthcare system, or population may not necessarily apply elsewhere.

Perhaps the most valuable lesson is that health information should start conversations, not end them. Social media can be a useful place to learn, explore, and ask questions. But when important health decisions are involved, curiosity should be accompanied by caution and, where necessary, consultation with qualified healthcare professionals.

Health Is More Complicated Than a Viral Post

Perhaps the greatest limitation of viral health advice is not that it is always wrong, but that it often oversimplifies inherently complex issues. The problem is not that people are seeking health advice online. The problem is that health is more complicated than social media often makes it appear

Health outcomes are rarely determined by a single food, herb, supplement, exercise, or remedy. They are shaped by a combination of factors, including genetics, lifeclass, environment, access to healthcare, and underlying medical conditions. What appears to work for one person may not work for another, and short-term improvements do not always translate into long-term health benefits.

This complexity is one reason why health recommendations are continually tested, challenged, and refined through scientific research. It is also why healthcare professionals are often cautious when making claims. In health, certainty is rarely as straightforward as it appears in a 60-second video.

As consumers of health information, we do not need to become scientists or medical experts. But we do need to resist the temptation of easy answers to complex questions. The most valuable health decisions are often informed not by the loudest voices or the most compelling testimonials, but by patience, evidence, and a willingness to look beyond the headline claim.
