GRNMA at KATH Joins Strike, Demands Immediate Reversal of CEO’s Suspension
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has announced that its members are joining the ongoing strike over the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo.
In a statement issued on Saturday, June 6, the association said the two‑week suspension of the CEO—directed by the Minister of Health—is not an effective response to the long‑standing challenges confronting the hospital.
It argued that the decision fails to address the deep‑rooted infrastructural deficits, congestion, inadequate logistics, and persistent resource constraints that continue to undermine healthcare delivery at the facility.
“The two‑week suspension of the Chief Executive Officer is unnecessary and is definitely not the solution to the enormous pressure, infrastructural challenges, congestion, inadequate logistics, and resource constraints confronting the hospital on a daily basis,” the statement said.
According to the nurses and midwives, patient safety and quality healthcare cannot be achieved through the suspension of the CEO, stressing that the systemic challenges facing KATH remain unaddressed.
The association called on the Ministry of Health to expedite the operationalisation of long‑awaited health facilities intended to decongest KATH. It further urged government to prioritise urgent retooling, infrastructural expansion, and improved resource allocation to strengthen the hospital’s capacity as a major referral centre.
The GRNMA at KATH also demanded the immediate withdrawal of the suspension, insisting that Dr. Baidoo must be allowed to continue managing the hospital to help address operational pressures and support overstretched health workers, particularly in the emergency department.
The association warned that its members would fully join the strike from 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 7, if the Minister of Health does not reverse the directive.
“We wish to state categorically that effective 8:00am 7th June 2026, Nurses and Midwives at KATH will join the strike if the directive from the Honourable Minister for Health is not reversed,” the statement added.
The association also urged the KATH Board to intervene to restore calm and prevent further escalation of industrial action that could disrupt healthcare delivery.
