Allow people to do their things in their rooms — Senyo Hosi on anti-LGBTQ bill
Lead Convener of the One Ghana Movement, Senyo Hosi, has expressed concern over the potential impact of the recently passed Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, warning that its implementation could fuel intolerance and hatred in society.
Parliament passed the bill on May 29 after a heated debate on the floor of the House.
The legislation seeks to criminalise LGBTQ+ activities, advocacy, and what it describes as the promotion of non-conventional sexual relations and family values.
Speaking on Accra-based JoyNews' Newsfile programme on Saturday, June 6, Hosi argued that while Ghanaian cultural values should be protected, the country must be careful not to create an environment that encourages hostility toward certain groups of people.
“We are trying to now stimulate hate of our society. This kind of active promotion of it was rapidly responsible and very insensitive to our society,” he said.
The policy analyst stressed that individuals should be allowed to live their private lives without intrusion, provided they do not impose their choices on others.
“Please allow people to live in their rooms and do their things. Don't bring your thing outside, but for people to start chasing you in there, trying to see whether you are doing it or you are not doing it,” he stated.
He questioned how such a law could be practically enforced and what evidence would be required to prove private conduct, suggesting that the country had more pressing national issues requiring attention.
