Focus on sakawa, not porn IDs – Kofi Bentil tells Sam George
IMANI Africa Vice President Kofi Bentil has questioned the government’s plan to require identity verification before people can access pornographic websites, arguing that authorities should be focusing on more pressing cyber-related problems.
Speaking on Newsfile, Bentil said Ghana faces serious online crime challenges that deserve greater attention than monitoring what adults choose to watch online.
“There’s real cybercrime in Ghana. Ghana is one of the capitals of international romance fraud,” he said.
According to him, resources should be directed at tackling internet fraud, cyber-enabled crime, and other digital threats that affect victims financially rather than creating systems to regulate access to adult content.
Bentil stressed that while pornography may be a concern for some people, it should not become a priority issue for government agencies responsible for digital policy.
“Focus on cybercrime, focus on fraud and the real threats facing people online,” he argued.
His comments come after Communications Minister Samuel George revealed that government is considering a policy that would require users to verify their age and identity before accessing pornographic websites in Ghana.
