Agona East Hit by Major Floods; NADMO Appeals for Urgent Support

The Agona East District was hit by a heavy downpour on Thursday, 4th June 2026, between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., resulting in widespread flooding across several communities.

Following distress calls from residents, a team from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), led by the District Director, ACDCO Seth A. Williams, together with the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Samuel Oscar Mensah, embarked on an emergency assessment tour to evaluate the extent of destruction.

The affected communities include Agona Kofi Anumkwaa, Agona Nsaba, Agona Kofi Kum, Agona Ninta, Agona Nampong, New Nampong, and Agona Kwanyako.

According to ACDCO Seth A. Williams, the assessment revealed varying degrees of destruction and displacement across all the communities visited.

“In almost all the communities, several households were affected and displaced as a result of the floods. Schoolchildren were also impacted, disrupting educational activities,” he noted.

Speaking to journalists at different locations, the NADMO Director described the situation as critical, calling for urgent support in the form of relief items and long-term interventions to address the recurring flooding.

Providing a breakdown of the situation in each community, he explained that Agona Adukwaa was completely cut off, as the main access road became unmotorable for both vehicles and pedestrians. Schoolchildren had to be evacuated to enable them to attend classes.

“At Agona Nsaba, the entire compound of the Church of Christ Preparatory School, which has a population of 420 pupils, was flooded, forcing authorities to temporarily close the school. The area requires serious dredging to allow free flow of the stream that passes through the community. I believe this will provide a permanent solution,” he said.

He added that at Agona Kofi Kum, the bridge was too narrow to contain the volume of water, leading to overflow and flooding. A similar situation was recorded at Agona Duakwa, near the new Police Station, where many households were affected.

In Nampong, the entire community was submerged, prompting a rapid response from NADMO personnel to evacuate residents, especially the elderly and children.

“A similar incident occurred about 16 years ago when the late former Central Regional Minister, Hon. Ama Benyiwa Doe, intervened and advised residents to relocate. Unfortunately, the New Nampong area is also muddy due to water seeping from beneath whenever it rains,” he added.

He further reported that Agona Kwanyarko Zongo, Osu, and Ofoase also experienced severe flooding, with many homes inundated and personal belongings destroyed. The team observed that indiscriminate dumping of refuse contributed significantly to the flooding.

“Fortunately, Nananom in Agona Kwanyarko have pledged to support the removal of the rubbish to prevent future occurrences,” he said.

ACDCO Seth A. Williams made a passionate appeal to the Member of Parliament for Agona East, Hon. Queenster Maame Pokua Sawyer, and the DCE, Hon. Samuel Oscar Mensah, to support efforts aimed at finding a lasting solution to the district’s flood‑prone areas.
