No arrests made over Accra Central Police Barracks fire yet — Police

The Ghana Police Service has refuted reports suggesting that arrests have been made in connection with the recent fire outbreak at the Accra Central Police Barracks.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, June 3, extensively damaged the Accra Central Police Barracks Annex, destroying 32 rooms and their contents, as well as a one-storey building within the facility.

The fire also resulted in significant losses for police officers and their families who occupied the affected structures, with personal belongings and property destroyed in the blaze.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the Police said investigations into the incident are still ongoing.

“The Accra Regional Police Command wishes to clarify that, contrary to earlier reports suggesting that arrests had been effected in connection with the fire outbreak at the Accra Central Police Barracks, no arrests have been made at this stage of investigations,” the statement said.

The Command further disclosed that a fire officer who sustained injuries while responding to the incident is receiving treatment.

“Meanwhile, a fire officer who sustained injuries during the operation is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital and is in stable condition,” the statement added.

According to the Police, no deaths have been recorded in connection with the fire.

The law enforcement agency also indicated that the cause of the fire has not yet been established and remains under investigation.

The Police Command commended personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service and other officers who assisted in containing the blaze and ensuring safety at the scene.
