Unauthorised structures demolished at Haatso

The Ga East Municipal Assembly has intensified its enforcement against illegal developments on waterways, demolishing unauthorised structures at Haatso and surrounding areas as part of efforts to prevent flooding in the municipality.

The Municipal Head of Works, Engineer Justin Glover, told Citi News that the operation was being carried out under the directive of the Spatial Planning Committee, targeting structures blocking drainage channels and natural waterways.

He revealed that officials had returned to one particular site for the fourth time to halt the construction of an unauthorised building obstructing access to a tributary of the Odaw River, stressing that the Assembly would not allow the development to continue.

Mr Glover warned that developers encroaching on waterways must voluntarily pull down their structures or risk demolition, adding that the Assembly remains committed to preventing future flooding in the area.

“We are embarking on this exercise to remove all unauthorised structures on waterways and on public rights of way. This is about the fourth time the Assembly is here,” he said.

“We are advising that anybody who builds on waterways should either remove it themselves, or this time round we are coming at them to make sure that we don’t experience flooding within the municipality.”

The demolition exercise is expected to extend to other affected communities, including Akweteyman, in the coming days.
