AMA announces June 6 ‘Operation free choked drains’ to tackle flooding in Accra
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced the June edition of the National Sanitation Day exercise scheduled for Saturday, June 6.
The exercise will focus on desilting drains, sweeping public spaces and evacuating refuse across the metropolis.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 3, and dubbed 'Operation free choked drains', forms part of efforts to reduce flooding risks amid the ongoing rainy season.
The Assembly noted the initiative will be carried out across all sub-metros, markets, lorry parks, communities and business districts in Accra.
“The exercise dubbed ‘Operation free choked drains’ will take place across all sub-metros, electoral areas, markets, lorry parks, communities, business districts and other public spaces within the metropolis,” the AMA said.
According to the Assembly, the clean-up will include clearing choked drains, removing refuse from markets and sweeping streets and waterways.
“Activities to be carried out during the exercise will include desilting and clearing of drains, removal of refuse from market areas and public spaces, clearing of choked waterways, sweeping of streets,” it added.
The AMA has noted that trading activities will not be allowed during the exercise, with all shops, stalls and hawking expected to remain closed until completion.
