NHIA registers Nsawam Prison inmates onto NHIS
The Eastern Regional Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), in collaboration with the Kwasi Nyantakyi Foundation and other partners, has undertaken a registration exercise to enrol inmates of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The initiative brought together several organisations and personalities, including the Joana Gyan Foundation, the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and its President, Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku.
Also participating in the programme were football legends Abedi Ayew "Pele", Samuel Osei Kuffour and Anthony Baffoe, as well as entertainment personalities such as Grace Ashley, Patapaa, Stay Jay and Dr Cryme.
The outreach formed part of efforts to extend healthcare coverage to vulnerable and underserved groups, particularly prison inmates, in support of Ghana's commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage.
Through the exercise, inmates who were not previously enrolled on the NHIS were registered and issued with membership cards, enabling them to access healthcare services under the scheme.
Speaking at the event, the Eastern Regional Operations Manager of the NHIA, Daniel Fuseini, underscored the importance of health insurance and reaffirmed the Authority's commitment to ensuring that all Ghanaians, regardless of circumstance, have access to essential healthcare services.
He also educated the inmates on the benefits of the NHIS and encouraged them to maintain active membership to guarantee uninterrupted access to healthcare.
Officials of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison expressed gratitude to the NHIA and its partners for the intervention, describing it as a major contribution toward improving healthcare services within the facility.
They noted that the registration exercise would enhance the health and wellbeing of inmates while strengthening healthcare access in the prison environment.
The programme also featured health education sessions and stakeholder engagements aimed at promoting health equity, inclusion and awareness.
The NHIA Eastern Regional Office reiterated its commitment to working with both public and private sector partners to expand NHIS coverage and improve access to quality healthcare services across the region.
