Consumers must get value for money — NCA urges telcos to improve quality of service

The Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, has called on telecommunications companies in Ghana to improve quality of service and ensure that consumers receive value for what they pay for.

He said persistent complaints about dropped calls, weak network coverage and poor internet quality have become the most consistent concerns raised by the public.

He said this while speaking at an Industry Stakeholder Forum in Accra on Monday, May 18, to mark the 2026 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day as well as the NCA’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

Rev Fianko stressed that while the sector has expanded significantly over the years, service delivery gaps remain a major threat to public trust.

He noted that the regulator will intensify enforcement measures and publish network performance data to hold operators accountable.

“The public is telling us in growing numbers and in increasingly clear terms that the service they are paying for is not the service they are receiving,” he said.

He further emphasised the responsibility of industry players and stakeholders in ensuring improved service delivery across the country.

“The service Ghanaians pay for must be the service they receive, and closing the coverage gap in our peri-urban and rural communities is the single most important task before this sector today,” added the NCA boss.

According to him, the NCA has already tightened quality-of-service benchmarks and reviewed improvement plans submitted by mobile network operators, which include capacity expansion, fibre upgrades and new site development.

He indicated that while operators have committed to improvements, the regulator will closely monitor implementation timelines and enforce compliance where necessary.

The NCA boss further appealed to the public and other stakeholders, including road contractors and security agencies, to support efforts in protecting telecom infrastructure, which he described as critical to national development.
