Reviving Ghana’s economy from junk status in one year commendable — Steve Manteaw
Policy analyst Steve Manteaw has dismissed claims that he is aligned with the current government for partisan reasons, insisting that his support is based solely on policy direction and results.
According to him, his position is informed by the government’s economic policies, which he believes are producing positive outcomes and deserve consideration.
Mr Manteaw explained that Ghana’s economy had been left in a difficult state by the previous administration and commended the current government for what he described as significant progress in stabilising the economy within a relatively short period.
He argued that the country’s movement from a “junk” economic rating to a “B” rating within one year was a major achievement that should be acknowledged.
“I’m aligned with the policies of this government, not for partisan reasons, but because their policy alternatives are worth exploring, and they’re yielding results,” he stated.
He further reflected on Ghana’s economic challenges, noting that excessive borrowing to stabilise the local currency had contributed to the country’s debt crisis and eventually led to the domestic debt exchange programme.
“We borrowed to shore up our currency and landed in huge debt that necessitated a universal haircut, including bald heads,” he remarked.
Mr Manteaw maintained that the gains made so far must now be translated into economic growth and job creation to improve the lives of Ghanaians.
