Of Mothers And Their Children — Standing In The Gap For Them
Today is Mother’s Day in some parts of the world, and yesterday—Saturday—I had the privilege of praying with a group of ladies for mothers everywhere. We understand the immeasurable importance of mothers in shaping families, communities, and nations.
I revisited Proverbs 31:10–31, the words a king (possibly Solomon) learned from his mother. The early verses describe a woman in her many roles: wife, homemaker, professional, and entrepreneur. Her qualities are striking—compassionate, generous, hardworking, responsible, elegant, strong, honorable, wise, and kind. Her worth is not defined by her possessions; she is far more than what she owns.
Toward the end of the chapter, she is celebrated as a MOTHER. Verse 28 says, “Her children rise up and call her blessed,” recognizing her sacrificial love and tireless care.
The chapter concludes with my favorite verse, Proverbs 31:30: “But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.”
Scripture reminds us that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Whatever type of mother you are, you flourish most in that role when you walk in reverence and awe of the Lord. Such a woman has a personal relationship with her Creator. He is her Lord, and He grants her the grace and strength to embody all these virtues. She is not a “self‑made woman,” but a God‑made woman.
WHO IS A MOTHER?
Motherhood comes in many forms:
Biological, Adoptive, Foster, Single, Blended Family, Spiritual, Widowed, Stepmother, Bereaved, Divorced, Empty‑Nester, Godmother, Mother‑in‑Law, Grandmother, Aunt or Sister acting as a mother. Many women wear several of these hats at once. Kudos to you. 🌹🌹🌹
The Bible itself reflects these diverse expressions of motherhood. Mary, the mother of Jesus, became John’s adoptive mother in John 19:26–27.
STANDING IN THE GAP FOR YOUR CHILD(REN)
Whatever category of motherhood you belong to, if your child is in physical, mental, relational, financial, or spiritual bondage, I bring you comforting news:
There are promises from the Lord you can stand on.
Like a watchman on an ancient city wall, you can intercede, pray, and sound the alarm on behalf of your children. Your mandate is simple yet powerful:
Pray for them—and do not give up—for nothing is impossible with God.
Here are scriptural anchors for different situations:
Physical Bondage
(Prison, missing, illness, trafficking, addiction, etc.)Jeremiah 31:16 — “For your work shall be rewarded, says the Lord, and they shall come back from the land of the enemy.”
Mental Bondage
(Anxiety, depression, low self‑esteem, emotional detachment, manipulation, cult influence, etc.)Philippians 4:6 — “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.”
Spiritual Bondage
(Spiritual blindness, occult involvement, demonic oppression, etc.)
1 John 3:8 — “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”
Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10b)
IN CONCLUSION
Mother, mummy, ma, mama, momma, mum—continue to stand in the gap for your children. God is not finished with them. He is still in the business of redemption and restoration.
“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” — Psalm 30:5 (NKJV)
Happy Mother’s Day, and God bless you as you labor in love for all your children. 🌷🌷🌷
