Government explores autonomous rapid transit system to modernise intra-city transport
The government is making efforts to deepen efforts at modernising Ghana’s public transport system with discussions centred on an Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) model.
The initiative is expected to introduce a more efficient and technology-driven approach to intra-city mobility, aimed at addressing long-standing traffic congestion challenges in major urban centres.
The development comes as part of ongoing engagements by the Ministry of Transport with international partners to explore sustainable transport solutions for the country.
The Deputy Minister for Transport and Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, disclosed this in a social media post on Saturday, May 9, following a working visit to China.
“As part of Government’s continued commitment to modernising Ghana’s transport sector, I had the honour of leading a delegation from Metro Mass Transit Limited on a working visit to CRRC Corporation Limited in Zhuzhou, China, to explore strategic collaboration towards transforming Ghana’s intra-city transport system,” she said.
She explained that discussions focused on the potential development of an Autonomous Rapid Transit system to improve urban mobility, safety, and efficiency in public transportation.
“Our engagement focused on the study and potential development of an Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system aimed at improving urban mobility, reducing traffic congestion, and providing safer, faster, and more efficient public transportation for the people of Ghana,” she noted.
The ART system is a modern transport concept that combines the flexibility of buses with aspects of rail systems, using smart technology to guide vehicles along designated lanes without traditional rail infrastructure.
According to the Deputy Minister, the initiative aligns with the broader transport vision of President John Dramani Mahama and government’s agenda to reposition the sector through innovation and strategic partnerships.
“This initiative reflects the vision of H.E John Dramani Mahama and Government’s broader commitment to repositioning Ghana’s transport sector through innovation, strategic partnerships, and sustainable infrastructure development,” she stated.
The Ministry of Transport indicated that it will continue engagements with stakeholders to develop modern, reliable, and accessible transport systems to support national development and improve daily commuting experiences across the country.
