People enter nursing only for jobs, not to serve – Ebo Buckman
A leading member of the United Party (UP), Ebo Buckman, believes Ghana’s healthcare problems go beyond equipment and infrastructure.
Speaking on New Day on TV3 monitored by MyNewsGh, Ebo Buckman said the country must also examine how health workers are trained and recruited.
His comments followed the release of a report into the death of Charles Amissah, who reportedly failed to receive emergency care at three hospitals in Accra.
According to Ebo Buckman, some people now join the nursing profession mainly because of employment opportunities.
“People go to school to become nurses not because they want to be nurses, but because they see it as a job opportunity,” he said.
He added that some workers may become more focused on salaries than patient care.
“They care more about the salary they take home monthly than the service they provide,” he stated.
Senior communicator for the Movement for Change now United Party, Ebo Buckman, said the country needs reforms that address training, logistics, recruitment, and motivation within the health sector.
