NDC approach to galamsey fight more transparent than previous NPP gov’t — Schandorf
The Media Relations Officer at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, has defended the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s handling of the fight against illegal mining.
He asserted that the administration has demonstrated honesty and transparency in its approach.
He said even President John Dramani Mahama has shown leadership by openly acknowledging that some members of his own party are implicated in illegal mining activities.
Speaking on Accra-based GTV on Thursday, May 7, Kwesi Schandorf argued that the current approach marks a departure from previous governments, which he accused of denying similar allegations.
According to him, the President’s openness is a critical step toward effective action in the anti-galamsey campaign.
“You would recall that not too long ago, the President himself, in his embodiment of truthfulness and honesty, made an admission that there are people in the ruling party who are complicit in illegal mining,” he stated.
Schandorf, who is also the PRO for NAIMOS, said such admissions are necessary for accountability and progress in the fight against galamsey.
“For the President to come and make that admission, at least we are making progress,” he noted.
He contrasted the current administration’s approach with that of the previous government, alleging that earlier claims of political involvement in illegal mining were often dismissed.
Kwesi Schandorf further indicated that investigations are ongoing into some alleged politically exposed persons within the NDC, including senior party figures.
He stressed that due process must be followed, adding that strong evidence is required before prosecution can proceed.
According to him, the government’s focus is to ensure that any action taken is backed by credible and conclusive evidence to avoid errors in prosecution.
