Police arrest four over Bolgatanga robberies

Suspects

Police in the Upper East Region say they have arrested four men suspected of carrying out a string of robberies in and around Bolgatanga.

The suspects were picked up on 5th May, 2026 after what officers describe as an intelligence-led operation.

They are named as Abdulai Ibrahim, Amadu Rahman, Amadu Sulemana also known as Saaga, and Adu Yakubu.

Investigators say the group met a day earlier at Gbane, a mining community in the Talensi District, after travelling from Yagaba and Fumbisi. Police believe they went there to carry out robberies, during which four motorbikes and several mobile phones were taken.

During questioning, officers say the men admitted to a number of attacks in the Talensi District, including along the Yagaba Fumbisi road and the Yagaba Nanguruma road in the North East Region. Police add that the suspects also confessed to a robbery at the Vikandi Phone Shop in Bolgatanga in March 2025, an incident that was widely shared on social media and showed armed men carrying an assault rifle.

According to police, the suspects also linked themselves to repeated robberies at mining sites in Gbane, where gold and cash were stolen.

Officers say the suspects later led them to a farm near Biung, close to Gbane, where an assault rifle had been hidden. A search of the area led to the recovery of an AK47 rifle and 87 rounds of ammunition concealed in a fertiliser sack.

Police say Amadu Rahman collapsed during the operation to retrieve the weapon. He was taken to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has been placed in the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The three remaining suspects are in custody and are expected to appear in court. Police say investigations are continuing.
