AU expresses solidarity with Chad following deadly Boko Haram attack
African Union (AU) Commission has condemned a deadly terrorist attack in Chad’s Lake Chad region and expressed solidarity with the country.
At least 23 Chadian soldiers were killed and 26 others injured after suspected Boko Haram fighters attacked a military post on the island of Barka Tolorom on Monday night.
The attack adds to a series of assaults by the Nigeria-based extremist group, which continues to pose a major security threat across the Lake Chad Basin.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 5, the AU Commission described the attack as unacceptable and extended condolences to the victims.
“The African Union Commission strongly condemns the terrorist attack carried out on the evening of Monday, 4 May 2026, against a military base in Barka Tolorom… which resulted in loss of life and injuries among the Chadian defence forces,” the statement read in part.
The continental body also conveyed its sympathies to those affected by the incident.
“The African Union Commission expresses its sincere condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the Government and the people of Chad,” it added.
The AU further reaffirmed its support for countries within the Lake Chad Basin in their fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
