Ghana Facilitates Safe Return of a Citizen Amid South Africa Xenophobia Concerns
The Government of Ghana has ensured the safe return of Emmanuel Akowuah Asamoah, a Ghanaian citizen who recently appeared in a widely shared video linked to xenophobic incidents in South Africa.
Mr Asamoah arrived in Ghana on Tuesday, accompanied by Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Anani Quashie.
Upon arrival, he was received by Ambassador Harold Agyeman, Coordinating Director for Political and Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with other ministry officials.
Addressing the media, Ambassador Agyeman reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to the safety and welfare of Ghanaian nationals abroad.
He disclosed that following the incident involving Mr Asamoah, immediate action was taken on the instructions of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to relocate him from danger and reunite him with his family.
Ambassador Agyemang also expressed deep concern over the resurgence of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, emphasising that Africa must remain a continent grounded in unity and mutual respect.
He added that Ghana would continue to monitor the situation closely while relying on assurances from South African authorities.
In his remarks, High Commissioner Quashie noted that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in South Africa has been actively engaging local authorities on the matter, while acknowledging that the situation has not yet fully stabilised.
He further commended Minister Ablakwa for his prompt intervention and dedication to protecting Ghanaian citizens abroad.
High Commissioner Quashie assured that the Ghana High Commission remains fully engaged with relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety of Ghanaians, adding that regular advisory notices are issued to guide the Ghanaian community on safe areas and caution against potential hotspots.
Mr Asamoah, for his part, expressed gratitude to the Government of Ghana for its swift response and efforts to ensure his safety during the ordeal.
