NADMO donates relief items to tidal wave victims in Fuveme

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has provided relief support to residents of Fuveme in the Anlo District following extensive destruction caused by tidal waves.

The donation, aimed at supporting affected households, included 400 bags of rice, 350 bags of maize, 200 bags of peas, 150 cartons of cooking oil, 100 packets of soap, and 2,000 mosquito nets.

The relief effort followed a visit to the community by NADMO’s Director-General, Major Dr Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon (Rtd), after tidal waves breached the banks of the River Volta, causing widespread damage.

Addressing residents, Major Dr Kuyon stressed the urgency of the situation, noting that the sea water incursion into the River Volta demands immediate intervention.

He assured the community of the government’s commitment to addressing the crisis, with support from external partners expected.

According to Dr Kuyon, the seawater intrusion into the river has disrupted irrigation activities and contributed to declining fish populations, threatening the livelihoods of farmers and fisherfolk in downstream communities.

The team toured affected areas and held discussions with local stakeholders on sustainable, long-term solutions to the recurring tidal wave problem.
