A former Minister for Health under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, has weighed into the National Democratic Congress (NDC) upcoming flagbearer contest.

The governing party is yet to release a timetable for its 2028 presidential primaries to choose a successor to President John Dramani Mahama, who is serving his final constitutional term.

Some notable names, including National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, and Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, have emerged as possible contenders.

Speaking on Accra-based Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on Monday, May 4, Dr Okoe Boye, said he would prefer Julius Debrah to lead the NDC.

According to him, aside from the NPP’s 2028 presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who has a superior vision, Julius Debrah has a better vision for the country.

“I’m in team Julius. He has a promise for this country after Bawumia than Asiedu Nketiah. As for Asiedu Nketiah, he can continue with his thank you tour but Julius is coming,” Okoe Boye said.

He further criticised Asiedu Nketiah for making promises to Ghanaians about cheaper electricity while in opposition, but presiding over what he described as expensive and unstable power in government.

Meanwhile, polls released by Global InfoAnalytics tip the NDC National Chairman as a frontrunner, alongside Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.
