Don’t engage in exam malpractice — Education Minister urges 2026 BECE candidates

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has cautioned candidates sitting for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to steer clear of examination malpractice.

More than 620,000 candidates from 20,395 schools across the country are writing the exams today, Monday, May 4.

A total of 620,141 candidates; comprising 304,349 boys and 315,792 girls, are expected to take part in the examination at centres nationwide.

Speaking during a monitoring exercise at Sefwi Asawinso in the Western North Region, the Minister stressed the need for honesty and discipline among candidates.

“We are particularly concerned about the growing phenomena of exam malpractices. Last year, it affected about 178 candidates and several papers were withheld. In some instances, the papers were canceled,” he said.

He urged candidates to see integrity as a core value of citizenship and national development.

“So don’t engage in any exam malpractice… we expect nothing short of the highest standard of integrity,” he added.

The Tamale South MP also disclosed that some teachers were sanctioned for their role in malpractice during the 2025 BECE.

He said about eight teachers were convicted and will be removed from the payroll of the Ghana Education Service after being found guilty of facilitating cheating.

The Minister warned that authorities will not hesitate to apply the law to anyone who undermines the credibility of the examination.
