Restoration of Akosombo turbines not automatic solution to current dumsor — Miracles Aboagye
Spokesperson to the 2028 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has rejected claims that the restoration of turbines affected by the Akosombo GRIDCo fire will resolve the country’s ongoing power outages.
According to the Ministry of Energy, the fire incident knocked out about 1,000 megawatts from the national grid, worsening intermittent outages across parts of the country.
The outages had initially been attributed to transformer upgrade works by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), before the Akosombo incident further strained supply.
Speaking on Accra-based JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, May 2, Energy Minister Dr John Abdulai Jinapor maintained that the situation has stabilised, insisting the country now has enough capacity to meet electricity demand.
However, responding on the same programme, Miracles Aboagye described the Minister’s position as misleading.
He argued that the power challenges began long before the Akosombo fire.
“Akosombo being fixed yesterday means nothing, because Akosombo wasn’t the reason why we had a crisis since February… there was energy crisis,” he said.
He added that presenting the restoration as a complete solution creates false public expectations.
“I am not convinced that we are out of the woods. In fact, I am more worried because then it tells me that the President and the minister will not have a solution to the problem,” he stated.
Miracles Aboagye further accused government of failing to be transparent about the depth of the energy challenges.
He stressed that recurring complaints from parts of the country, including Kumasi, indicate that the problem is broader than the recent incident and requires a more comprehensive solution.
