‘This is leadership’ — Joyce Bawah lauds Energy Minister over restoration of Akosombo turbines

A Senior Presidential Advisor and Special Aide to President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has commended the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, over the restoration of power units at the Akosombo GRIDCo power station following a fire outbreak.

The six generation units went out of service after the incident, which reportedly led to a loss of about 1,000 megawatts from the national grid.

The situation worsened intermittent power outages across the country, which the Electricity Company of Ghana had earlier attributed to ongoing transformer upgrade works.

In a social media post on Friday, May 1, Dr Jinapor praised engineers and technical teams for restoring operations.

“Mission accomplished. All generation units are now back in service,” he stated.

Reacting to the development in a social media post on the same day, the Presidential Advisor said the Energy Minister took responsibility and ensured the swift restoration of power.

“This morning our hardworking Energy Minister and his team have announced that their tireless efforts in the aftermath of the GRIDCo incident have paid dividends. All units shut down by the fire have been fully restored and are functioning properly. This is leadership,” she wrote.

She added that the Minister’s actions reflected decisive leadership in managing the crisis.
