Homowo: Ban on drumming and noise-making begins May 4 — AMA urges compliance
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that the 2026 edition of the annual ban on drumming and noise-making will take effect from Monday, May 4 to Thursday, June 4.
The directive forms part of preparations for the Homowo Festival, observed by the Ga people, and is aimed at maintaining peace, harmony and security within the metropolis.
In a statement issued on Thursday, April 30, and signed by Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the AMA's Head of Public Affairs, the assembly noted that the measure is consistent with tradition and is expected to guide public conduct throughout the period.
“The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) wishes to inform all residents in its jurisdiction that this year's ban on drumming and noise-making commences from Monday 4th May to Thursday 4th June 2026,” the statement read in part.
It added that churches are to confine their activities within their premises and avoid the use of musical instruments, while roadside evangelism is to be suspended.
“The positioning of loudspeakers outside the premises of churches, mosques and pubs are banned. Roadside evangelists are to cease their activities during this period,” the Assembly stated.
The AMA further indicated that funeral rites and related activities are prohibited during the period, in line with guidelines by the Ga Traditional Council.
It stressed that only a designated task force made up of AMA officials, the Ghana Police Service and representatives of the Traditional Councils will be allowed to enforce the directive.
