Akosombo fire: All generation units now back in service — Energy Minister
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that all power generation units at the Akosombo GRIDCo power station are back in service.
The six generation units went out of service following a recent fire outbreak at the facility, which reportedly caused a loss of about 1,000 megawatts from the national grid.
The development worsened intermittent power outages across the country, which the Electricity Company of Ghana had earlier attributed to ongoing transformer upgrade works.
In a social media post on Friday, May 1, the Minister commended engineers and technical teams for restoring operations.
“Mission accomplished. All generation units are now back in service,” he stated.
He added that the restoration followed sustained efforts under difficult conditions.
“In the face of a major system disruption, and against all odds, our engineers, technicians, and emergency teams worked around the clock to restore power and stabilise the grid,” he said.
Dr. Jinapor further assured that the system has now been stabilised, with coordinated support from GRIDCo, the Volta River Authority (VRA), and the ECG.
