Free Zones boss alleges political sabotage in Akosombo sub-station fire

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Mary Awusi

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Mary Awusi, has alleged that the reported fire at the Akosombo substation in the Eastern Region was orchestrated by some elements within the New Patriotic Party.

Her remarks come in the wake of calls by the Minority in Parliament for President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss the Minister for Energy and Green Transition over ongoing power challenges.

Speaking on The Citizen Show with Nana Yaw Darko on Accra 100.5 FM on Thursday, Dr Awusi claimed that prior to the National Democratic Congress assuming office, some members of the NPP had predicted possible power outages.

According to her, those statements suggest prior knowledge of developments within the energy sector, which she believes may have been deliberately engineered to undermine the current administration.

Dr Awusi described the situation as a calculated attempt to sabotage the government and link it to the return of “dumsor,” a term widely used to describe persistent power outages in Ghana.

She, however, urged the public to remain calm and patient, assuring that government is taking steps to stabilise the power situation in the coming days.
