'No Ghanaian life lost' — Ablakwa engages South Africa over viral Xenophobia concerns

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has confirmed that Ghana is engaging authorities in South Africa following concerns raised by a viral video showing a confrontation involving a Ghanaian resident.

He disclosed that he held a telephone conversation with his South African counterpart, Ronald Lamola, to address the issue.

“I have this morning held a telephone conversation with my South African counterpart… I called him on the trending videos about Ghanaians coming under extremely disturbing xenophobic attacks in South Africa,” he said in a post.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the South African Foreign Minister expressed concern and assured that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.

“The South African Foreign Minister has expressed his empathy with the victims and promised full scale investigations into the incidents,” Ablakwa stated.

He further revealed that the South African government is expected to engage African diplomatic missions on the matter.

“The Government of South Africa is set to hold a briefing with African Ambassadors later today,” he said.

Mr Ablakwa also indicated that he has been working closely with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in South Africa to coordinate a response.

“I have been in constant contact with Ghana’s High Commissioner… coordinating our response,” he noted.

He added that the Ghanaian captured in the viral video has been identified and is receiving support.

“Our colleagues have located the main victim in the viral video and are offering consular assistance. He is doing very well,” he said.

The Minister assured the public that no Ghanaian casualties have been recorded.

“No Ghanaian life has been lost. We urge calm and confidence,” he added.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of citizens both at home and abroad.

“The Government of Ghana remains uncompromising about the welfare and safety of Ghanaians both home and abroad,” he stressed.

Mr Ablakwa also appealed for calm and unity, cautioning against actions that could undermine relations among African countries.
