Open Letter To President Mahama On The Sudden U-Turn On The Anti Lgbtq+ Bill Passage

Dear President Mahama!
I am not only shocked but also dismayed by your sudden U-turn on the Anti LGBTQ+ bill you played so much premium on in opposition.

Truly, your recent comments on this Anti LGBTQ+ matter cast serious doubt on your readiness to preserve our culture and heritage, which you promised to protect while in opposition.

Mr. President, you vehemently criticized the previous NPP government and leveraged on this issue to secure the trust of Ghanaians, who ultimately granted you the mandate to lead.

Yet, a year later, your position has changed, and the importance your Party once attached to passing the bill has diminished.

Further, your recent declaration that there are more pressing issues to tackle than this bill is a display of a lack of principle and readiness.

Fast forward, is it only now that you have recognized there are more pressing concerns than the anti-LGBTQ bill, or is it due to external pressures?

In addition, what's the fate of our revered religious leaders who had hope in you to fulfill these promises made on this sensitive matter at hand?

In all sincerity, the above questions beg for answers from you as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to provide an extensive and well-convinced explanation.

Under normal circumstances, we cannot continue on this trajectory of using all means to win power and later turn around to abandon it due to external pressures.

Therefore, as a citizen, I'm really scandalized by the lack of political will on the part of you as the number one gentleman of the land to fulfill this promise of passing the Anti LGBTQ+ bill into law.

In fact, you have previously stated that our culture and society abhor this practice, and you continued to emphasize it as a statesman and as the President of the Republic of Ghana.

Be that as it may, many believed that you have changed your mind and posture towards the passage of the Anti LGBTQ bill due to external pressures and it's imperative for you to exhibit the boldness you showed in opposition as a Presidential Candidate for NDC.

Mr. President, what's critical about the whole issue has to do with the shame that some of our revered clergy, Imams, and other CSOs will be going through since you have reneged on fulfilling this promise you made to the people of Ghana.

As a citizen, I'm dumbfounded particularly when I take a cursory look at the posture and the insincerity with which this delicate matter has been handled, and the U-turn to run for cover as if it's no longer a priority to Ghanaians.

Moreover, after carefully glancing through the commentary on this matter, what struck me most again was the thoughts of the Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofoso, who served as the government's spokesperson.

Mr. President, in amplifying your voice, he stated in verbatim that Ghanaians don't see the Anti LGBTQ+ bill as a priority and I'm equally taken aback by this utterance.

Simply put, when did Ghanaians come to the realization that this immoral act is no longer a priority for them to drum home as citizens?

This beats my imagination and further compounds the insincerity and dishonest posture of your government which made political capital out of it before the 2024 elections.

In all honesty, some of us knew it was a political tool for you to garner the votes of the electorate, and after attaining power the chicken has come home to roost and the reality is hitting hard on you and the NDC.

At this juncture, we the concerned citizens call on you to fulfill the promise and not try to play on the intelligence of everyone through these unacceptable utterances after pressure has been mounted on you to deliver as expected.

We are monitoring closely and this will go down in memory lane as one of the scammed political promises to secure and protect our values and family lives as promised in opposition.
