Sugar sacks now used to bag cocoa under Mahama govt – Annoh-Dompreh
Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has expressed concern over reports that cocoa beans are being packaged in sugar sacks in some parts of the country.
He said the situation highlights underlying operational difficulties within the cocoa value chain, particularly relating to the availability of standardised materials for bagging and handling cocoa.
Speaking during an engagement between the Minority Caucus and stakeholders in cocoa growing communities, Annoh-Dompreh warned that the practice could undermine quality control measures and damage Ghana’s long established reputation in the international cocoa market.
He emphasised the importance of maintaining strict standards across the entire cocoa process, noting that the crop remains a key pillar of the national economy and must be handled with care from production through to export.
The lawmaker called for immediate intervention by the appropriate authorities to ensure that farmers and licensed buying companies have access to the right packaging materials to preserve quality.
