Bongo mark Independence Day in black attire after DCE’s death

Residents of Bongo observed this year’s Independence Day with both celebration and grief following the recent death of the District Chief Executive, Joseph Abaah Akaseke.

The solemn mood overshadowed the national celebration as many residents and officials wore black attire in honour of the late DCE, whose passing occurred just days before the event.

Despite the mourning, the district still commemorated the day with a colourful parade involving 21 contingents made up of schoolchildren from public and private institutions. The students marched proudly to mark Ghana’s independence while also paying tribute to the late district leader for his contributions to education and development.

In a tribute during the ceremony, schoolchildren described Joseph Abaah as an exceptional leader whose short time in office left a lasting impact on the district.

“Bongo has had DCEs, but you were exceptional despite your short stay in office. We cannot question God, but our prayer is that your gentle soul continues to rest in peace,” the tribute read.

The Member of Parliament for Bongo, Lawyer Charles Bawa Duah, also reflected on the late DCE’s commitment to youth development and education.

According to him, the late Joseph Abaah was deeply passionate about improving opportunities for young people in the district.

“Joseph Abaah Akaseke committed his life to youth leadership. He was particularly determined to improve the condition of the youth. We had several discussions on how we could work together to improve education in the district. We had many plans, but sadly we have lost him,” he said.

Lawyer Bawa Duah also used the occasion to announce the introduction of an award scheme to recognise hardworking staff of the Ghana Education Service in the district.

Addressing the gathering, the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri, urged residents to uphold the national values of discipline, hard work, patriotism and service to the country.

The event ended with a renewed call for unity and dedication to national development, even as the people of Bongo continue to honour the memory of their late District Chief Executive.
