Ghana Acquires Airbus H175 Helicopter from France: A Major Boost to National Air Capabilities
On 5 March 2026, the Ghana Air Force officially took delivery of its first Airbus H175 helicopter from France a significant milestone in the ongoing modernization of Ghana’s military aviation fleet.
A New Chapter in Air Force Modernization
The handover of the H175 helicopter is part of a broader defence procurement programme approved by Ghana’s Parliament to strengthen the operational capacity and readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces. This initiative aims to replace ageing aircraft and introduce modern, versatile platforms capable of addressing both security and humanitarian challenges.
In December 2025, Parliament approved contract agreements with Airbus Helicopters in France for the supply of multiple helicopters specifically one Airbus H160 and three H175 helicopters under a €125.97 million deal. At the same time, the government also agreed to purchase a long-range Falcon 6X aircraft from French manufacturer Dassault Aviation.
The contracts formalized Ghana’s first order for multi-mission Airbus helicopters, marking a renewed partnership with Airbus and highlighting the nation’s commitment to modernizing its fleet.
Journey from France to Ghana
The newly acquired H175 was ferried from the Airbus Helicopters facility in Marignane, France, to Accra, Ghana. The delivery flight followed a carefully planned route across Spain and North-West Africa before the helicopter arrived at the Air Force Base in Accra on 5 March 2026.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft was welcomed with a traditional water cannon salute, a ceremonial aviation tradition symbolizing the formal entry of new aircraft into service. Senior military officials and government representatives were present to mark the occasion, underscoring the strategic importance of the acquisition.
Enhanced Mission Capabilities
Equipped with advanced avionics, extended range, and higher payload capacity, the Airbus H175 is expected to significantly enhance the Ghana Air Force’s capabilities. The helicopter will support a wide range of critical operations including:
Search and rescue missions
Medical evacuation and humanitarian assistance
Disaster response
Maritime and border surveillance
Troop and logistics transport
These mission profiles reflect Ghana’s growing need for flexible air assets capable of responding rapidly to both civilian emergencies and national security challenges.
Strategic Rationale and Government Vision
The acquisition aligns with defence priorities outlined in the 2026 budget statement, aimed at addressing weaknesses in the Air Force’s ageing fleet which had been highlighted by previous operational losses. Procuring modern aircraft such as the H175 increases reliability, reduces long-term maintenance costs, and enhances overall military effectiveness.
The programme also reflects Ghana’s deepening defence cooperation with France and other international partners, positioning the country to better contribute to regional stability and humanitarian support across West Africa.
Looking Ahead
Ghana expects the remaining helicopters under the Airbus contract to be delivered in phases over the coming years, with training programmes for pilots and ground crews to ensure smooth integration into Air Force operations.
Overall, the acquisition of the Airbus H175 helicopter marks a major step forward in modernizing Ghana’s air capabilities combining enhanced operational flexibility with increased readiness to serve both military and civilian needs.
