69th Independence Day: Celebration cost reduced from GH¢20m to GH¢1.5m – Kwakye Ofosu

Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu

The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has revealed that the 69th Independence Day celebration will cost the state approximately GH¢1.5 million as government adopts a scaled-down approach to the national event.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM on March 5, Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the decision to reduce the scale of the ceremony forms part of measures aimed at cutting public expenditure while still commemorating Ghana’s independence.

“It is to save cost. We have decided to save money and use it for other pressing national issues. It will cost 95 per cent less than the previous cost, and that amounts to about GH¢1.5 million,” he stated.

According to him, earlier Independence Day celebrations typically cost about GH¢20 million.

He emphasised that despite the modest nature of this year’s event, the anniversary remains an important milestone in Ghana’s history.

“Sixty-nine years of nationhood is a very significant achievement,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu said.

Reflecting on Ghana’s national journey, he said the country has demonstrated resilience and unity over the years.

“Over the years, we have had our ups and downs as a country, but by and large, we have managed to hold ourselves together. We've built a nation that is inclusive, where there is religious and social tolerance,” he said.

He also pointed to gradual national progress despite past challenges.

“Even if we've had setbacks, we've also made incremental progress. Since the advent of this government, a lot has been done to improve the economy. The economy is in much better shape than it was before,” he added.

As part of activities marking the 69th Independence anniversary, a parade will be held at the forecourt of the Jubilee House under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope.”

The ceremony is expected to bring together Ministers of State, members of the diplomatic corps and invited members of the public.

Military personnel will also participate in a parade, with the Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces and President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama, serving as the reviewing officer.

The Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Terrance Michael Drew, will attend the ceremony as the Special Guest of Honour.

Last year’s 68th Independence Day celebration was also held at the forecourt of the Jubilee House, marking a shift away from the larger national parades that previously featured hundreds of school children.
