The Sacred Bond Of The Ummah: A Critique Of Complicity
The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (PBUH), established a profound foundation for the Muslim community based on the principles of mutual respect and protection. He warned against various forms of interpersonal conflict—such as envy, hatred, and dishonest trade practices—emphasizing that Muslims must act as brothers. A Muslim is one who does not oppress, abandon, lie to, or hold another in contempt. As the Prophet (PBUH) highlighted, true piety resides in the heart, and it is a grave sin to despise a fellow believer. Indeed, a Muslim’s blood, property, and honour are sacred (Sahih Muslim 2564)
This sacred bond is further solidified in the narrations of Ibn Umar, where the Prophet (PBUH) explicitly defined the duties of this relationship: "A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor.
Whoever fulfills the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2442; Sahih Muslim 2580).
This promise ensures that those who relieve the distress of a fellow Muslim or cover their faults will find Allah assisting and shielding them on the Day of Resurrection (Sahih Muslim 2580).
The Desecration of Ramadan: From Gaza to Tehran.
The teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) emphasize that this bond is not merely a suggestion but a requirement of faith. The Quran confirms this universal fraternity, stating: "The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers" (Quran 49:10). Consequently, every Muslim is a brother or sister to every other, regardless of national borders.
Yet, we witness a tragic pattern where the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan is repeatedly violated. Just as the people of Palestine have long endured bombardment and starvation during their month of fasting, a similar catastrophe has struck Iran. On February 28, 2026, during the first week of Ramadan, a joint U.S.-Israeli operation—internally named "Operation Epic Fury"—targeted the compound of Iran’s Supreme Leader in Tehran.
The strike resulted in the martyrdom of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed alongside members of his family, including his daughter and grandchildren. This targeted assassination of a spiritual leader during the most sacred time of the year mirrors the unprovoked suffering in Gaza, where surprise attacks in March 2025 shattered a ceasefire during Ramadan, claiming civilian lives during Suhoor and Iftar.
A Unilateral Defiance of International Law.
This escalation was not the result of international consensus but a unilateral decision by Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu. Reports indicate the two leaders held a pivotal call on February 23, 2026, where they decided to launch the decapitation strike on Saturday, February 28. This action was taken against the tenets of international law, which prohibit the use of force against the territorial integrity of any State.
In the face of this aggression, leading international bodies like the United Nations have been described as "toothless bulldogs". While Secretary-General António Guterres and various UN
agencies condemned the strikes, the UN Security Council remains paralysed. Because the United States holds a permanent seat and veto power, it can effectively block any resolution condemning its own actions, rendering the council's oversight largely symbolic.
Socio-Economic Consequences and Global Impact.
The war has triggered a profound global shock, with socio-economic impacts that threaten to permanently alter the world order:
- Energy Crisis: Oil prices surged immediately to $82 a barrel, with experts predicting a jump to $100 or more if the conflict remains protracted.
- Supply Chain Paralysis: The Strait of Hormuz, which handles 20% of the world's oil and a massive portion of global LNG, has become a war zone. Shipping companies are avoiding the area, causing massive disruptions in pharmaceuticals, electronics, and food supplies.
- Global Inflation: The surge in energy and freight costs is fuelling hyperinflationary pressures, particularly in Europe and energy-dependent Asian nations.
The End of Hegemony: A World Never the Same.
The world will likely never be the same after this conflict. The decision to use Gulf states as staging grounds for attacks on a fellow Muslim nation has exposed deep fractures within the region. By the end of this war, the long-standing American hegemony over the Gulf and its status as the world's undisputed superpower may reach a tipping point. The erosion of international legal norms and the evident failure of global governance to protect sovereign states suggest a shift toward a multi-polar world where Western dominance is no longer absolute.
A Call for the Unity of the Ummah
For an Islamic state to prioritize strategic alliances with foreign powers over the safety and sanctity of another Muslim nation's blood is not only a geopolitical tragedy but also a spiritual violation. True leadership in Islam requires the protection of the weak and the standing together of the faithful.
- Reject Complicity: Muslim nations must refuse to allow their soil or airspace to be used for the shedding of Muslim blood.
- Collective Diplomacy: The Ummah must move beyond sectarian divides to form a unified front against external aggression.
- Return to the Covenant: Sovereignty belongs to Allah alone. Islamic states must realign their policies with the Quranic mandate: "And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided" (Quran 3:103).
The martyrdom of leaders and the ongoing massacre of civilians must serve as a final wake-up call. Until the Muslim world stands as one body, its sanctity will continue to be violated with impunity.
