NDC’s Identity Under Threat
The National Democratic Congress must tread cautiously as it embarks on another membership drive.
History offers a warning. Ahead of the 2015 2016 presidential and parliamentary primaries, the party undertook a similar exercise that generated significant internal challenges.
The timing of such drives especially when it precede elections that creates fertile ground for manipulation. Without strict vigilance, non-committed individuals can infiltrate the party’s database, not out of loyalty, but for strategic advantage.
Today, the NDC is experiencing renewed attraction, particularly among the educated class and professionals. Ironically, there was a time when openly identifying with the party on university campuses was considered unfashionable, even risky. As recalled by Lawyer Martin Kpebu, it was once almost treated as an “abomination” in certain academic spaces to be associated with the NDC. Loyal adherents often operated quietly, sometimes discreetly attending meetings
The political climate has changed. The NDC is now viewed as a viable and intellectually attractive platform. But this surge in interest demands scrutiny. What accounts for the sudden influx? Is it genuine ideological alignment or calculated opportunism?
The party must not forget that only a few years ago, some critics dismissed it as a gathering of “Veranda Boys and Girls.” It would be naïve to assume that all who now seek refuge within its fold have suddenly undergone ideological transformation.
If the membership drive is not managed with discipline, the party risks dilution of its culture and values. Political migrants who view the NDC merely as a temporary shelter especially those disillusioned with the New Patriotic Party may import tendencies that undermine cohesion and identity.
The NDC must therefore protect its ideological core, scrutinize its membership processes, and ensure that expansion does not come at a cost. Growth without safeguards is not strength it is vulnerability.
If vigilance fails and infiltration takes root, the consequences could be profound. The time to guard the party’s identity is now — not when the damage has already been done.
