Bawumia mourns Ghanaian tomato traders killed in Burkina Faso attack

2028 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed shock over the deaths of several Ghanaian traders in a terrorist attack in Titao, northern Burkina Faso, on Saturday, February 14.

The victims, primarily tomato traders, were caught in the attack while transporting goods across the border.

Efforts are ongoing to evacuate the surviving victims and provide support to their families.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 16, the former Vice President extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

“I’ve received with shock news of some Ghanaian traders who have been killed, as well as several others injured in a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso. Ghanaian traders must not be left to such peril as they go about their trade,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia further urged government to ensure stronger intelligence collaboration to protect Ghanaians abroad.

“I urge the government to deepen intelligence collaboration with all our neighbors to ensure Ghanaians are protected wherever they find themselves. Our well-established framework for preventing and countering violent extremism and terrorism should be strengthened,” he added.

Meanwhile, Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, disclosed that the bodies of seven deceased traders were burnt beyond recognition and had begun decomposing, necessitating burial in Burkina Faso.
