NPP 2026 Presidential Primary; Tradition over Revolution

The NPP true to its nature as conservatives has chosen Tradition over Revolution just like the party’s 1998 flagbearer race between those preferring conservatism to radicalism in the intra-party battle between J.A Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo.

The NPP primary is over. By 6pm Ghana time, it was apparent that Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, the country’s former vice president and the NPP’s flagbearer in the 2024 election had been retained by the party with most delegates choosing him (56.48%) to lead them again to battle in the upcoming 2028 elections.

His main contender Kennedy Agyapong the former MP for Assin Central came in a distant 2^nd with about 23% and Brain Acheampong, former Agriculture minister and current MP for Kwahu Abetifi would pull off a delegate coup with a close 3rd place.

The real battle, however, had been between Dr. Bawumia representing the tradition of the NPP versus those who yearned for a revolution, i.e., something different and a bit more radical. The election was between Conservatism and Change. Did the NPP delegates, whom according to the renowned pollster Musa Dankwa are on the older side of the spectrum favor the known quantity and more predictable candidate in Bawumia or the much unpredictable Agyapong, who is considered a maverick in Ghana’s political space.

That answer was delivered by 6pm Ghana time with Dr. Bawumia winning a plurality of the delegate votes; A one-time victory with no run-off needed as was anticipated by some. The Battle for the NPP has ended and the tradition continues indeed. Congratulations to H. E Dr.Bawumia. GYE NYAME!
