We must rally behind Bawumia; begin 2028 campaign today — Afenyo-Markin urges NPP
Minority Leader in Parliament and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to immediately rally behind newly elected flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and begin work toward winning the 2028 general elections.
He cautioned that failure in 2028 would be a collective responsibility of the party and not that of the flagbearer alone.
The call comes on the back of the NPP’s presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, in which more than 211,000 delegates voted across 333 centres nationwide, with Dr Bawumia emerging winner with 56.48 per cent of the total votes cast.
Addressing party stakeholders in the Effutu constituency over the weekend, Afenyo-Markin stressed the need for early mobilisation at the grassroots, noting the party could not afford to delay its campaign efforts.
“The mission for victory 2028 begins today. We cannot wait until 2028 to start campaign in this constituency,” he said.
He cautioned against internal divisions, urging party members to channel their differences into strengthening the party rather than giving political opponents an advantage.
“Let us not allow the NDC to exploit our temporary disagreement. From the minority caucus in Parliament down to the polling station, there must be one message, one mission, one team behind Dr Mahamudu,” he said.
The Minority Leader also referenced the party’s loss in the 2024 elections, indicating that complacency could lead to a repeat if members fail to commit fully to the flagbearer’s campaign.
