Let Us Reject Blackmail And Make Informed Choices In Selecting Our Flagbearer
I extend warm greetings and felicitations to you, trusting that you enjoy divine favour and excellent well‑being wherever you are.
As we approach tomorrow’s Flagbearer election, you have all witnessed the conduct, posture, and messages of the various aspirants—an experience familiar in our internal contests designed to strengthen the Party’s democratic culture.
Regrettably, the actions of some aspirants have been troubling. Their campaigns have been marred by religious and ethnic undertones, insults, and blackmail, rather than constructive, idea‑driven engagement.
We are fully aware of the divisive dangers of exploiting religion and ethnicity—practices that contradict the NPP’s long‑standing values of inclusivity, regardless of faith, tribe, age, or background. This principle has guided our Party since its inception, and the current deviation by some aspirants is both disheartening and alarming.
It is therefore imperative that you, our distinguished delegates, safeguard the image and dignity of the NPP from individuals whose utterances appear unguided and disrespectful.
A process that should have centred on the exchange of ideas and policy alternatives has instead been overshadowed by unprintable and unacceptable language. How do we hope to recapture national confidence when some continue to harbour animosity and bitterness, even within a healthy democratic competition?
Indeed, no individual is bigger than the NPP. The Party’s interest must be paramount, and you—our respected delegates—hold the power to entrust the mandate to someone responsible in thought and action.
What lies ahead after this crucial contest will be demanding. It requires a unifier whose leadership qualities reflect the core values of the NPP. While we all have choices, those choices must be guided by the need to select a leader of exceptional character and competence.
We stand at a crossroads. Rebuilding, reconnecting, and restructuring our Party must be our top priority if we are to bounce back stronger and more united.
Fellow Patriots, among the five aspirants seeking to lead the Party, the author argues that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has demonstrated courage, maturity, emotional intelligence, and composure—even in the face of unwarranted attacks. This, the author notes, reflects the principle that “leadership begins with self‑discipline.”
According to the author, Dr. Bawumia has remained focused on his message, articulating policies grounded in ideas and experience. His long service in national politics, the respect he commands, and his familiarity with the Party’s traditions are cited as reasons he is well‑positioned to help the NPP navigate its current challenges.
The author further argues that Dr. Bawumia’s visibility, leadership record, and policy innovations over the past eight years make him a strong contender whose election could reinvigorate the Party.
In the author’s view, electing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as Flagbearer on Saturday, January 31, 2026, would rekindle and strengthen the spirit of the NPP, enabling the Party to move forward with unity and renewed purpose.
