Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II: Emir of Kano and Supporter of Quranic Achievement
Khalifa Dr. Muhammadu Sanusi II (often referred to simply as Sanusi Lamido Sanusi) is the traditional ruler and Emir of Kano in northern Nigeria. He is a respected Islamic scholar, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and a vocal advocate for education, social reform, and the empowerment of children especially the girl child through learning and faith-based achievements.
As a leader, the Emir has consistently encouraged Islamic and secular education, urging parents and communities to give priority to schooling and moral development for all children, with a particular focus on the girl child. His long-standing advocacy includes emphasizing female education and Qur’anic learning as indispensable foundations for societal progress.
Celebrating Young Quran Memorizers
In line with his support for education and Islamic values, recent local reports indicate that His Highness the Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II, honored young achievers in Quranic memorization. According to a palace announcement, the Emir awarded a cash gift of ₦2 million to a young Quran memorizer, Aisha Sani Khamis, recognizing her remarkable accomplishment in memorizing the Holy Qur’an at a young age. The presentation took place at the Emir’s palace, reflecting the monarch’s continued commitment to encouraging children who exemplify dedication to their faith and studies.
While Aisha is reported in some sources as being around 11 years old, the celebration of her success reflects a broader tradition in Northern Nigeria of honoring children often as young as nine or ten who complete the entire memorization (hifdh) of the Qur’an, a significant milestone in Islamic learning.
Why This Matters
Memorizing the entire Holy Qur’an (becoming a hafiz/hafiza) is a highly respected achievement in Muslim communities. It requires exceptional discipline, perseverance, and deep engagement with the text. By publicly recognizing and rewarding such young scholars, Emir Sanusi sends a powerful message:
Valuing Education: He reinforces the importance of learning and intellectual growth both religious and secular in building confident, capable young citizens.
Promoting Gender Equality: His support highlights that girl, just as much as boys, can excel in scholarly pursuits and should be celebrated for their achievements.
Strengthening Community Values: By honoring Quranic memorizers, the Emir fosters pride in cultural and religious heritage, encouraging other youths to strive for excellence.
Legacy of Encouraging Youth Achievement
Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II’s leadership goes beyond ceremonial duties. Through his public pronouncements and personal engagement, he champions an inclusive vision of education where both girls and boys are encouraged to pursue knowledge, faith, and personal growth. His actions affirm that intellectual achievements, rooted in moral and spiritual development, deserve societal recognition and support.
