The Modern Lifestyle Upgrade No One Told Ghanaians About: Biohacking
The first time I heard the term biohacking, It honestly sounded like a word you’d typically hear in a science fiction movie. Thus involving DNA editing, gaining incredible superpowers and unlocking certain weird or secret abilities. Very intimidating as it might sound it’s in actual fact very far from it. In reality, biohacking refers to the practice of making intentional, science based lifeclass changes which improve how the body and mind function. It involves various tips and tricks for enhancing the body’s ability to function at peak performance [1]. As lifeclass related conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and chronic stress continue to rise globally and in Ghana, understanding biohacking offers a very practical way to take control of our own health.
Biohacking involves deliberately influencing biological processes through lifeclass, nutrition, technology, and behavioural changes [1][2]. This can be as simple as improving your sleep quality or tracking your physical activity, or as advanced as using wearable technology such as smart watches to monitor our health data or parameters. It’s very important for us all to note that even though extreme forms of body modification exist, most biohacking practices available are non-invasive and focused on everyday health optimisation [3].So there is no need to worry.
Why Biohacking Really Matters for Ghanaians
This is undoubtedly due to the fact that life in our part of the world can be very stressful. From long work hours, to traffic stress, to limited physical activity, and irregular or inadequate sleep, these factors increase one’s risk of developing metabolic diseases and reducing one’s mental well being. Biohacking provides a certain framework for addressing these challenges intentionally, by using various tools which are already supported by medical and public health research.
What are some of the Biohacking Practices Already Common in Ghana
There are certain practices and forms of biohacking that we practice unknowingly as Ghanaians and they actually show that biohacking does not require expensive gadgets or even foreign concepts. These are some of them:
- Intermittent fasting or time restricted eating. This is often for religious or cultural reasons and has been shown to improve the body’s metabolic health as well as insulin sensitivity [4].
- Herbal drinks, such as hibiscus (sobolo) and moringa, contain certain antioxidants that may support cardiovascular and general health.
- Sunlight exposure, especially in the morning, helps to regulate circadian rhythms and vitamin D production, which affects immunity and mood [5].
- Walking and physical activity also improve cardiovascular health and reduce stress a lot.
Furthermore, there are other widely accepted ‘biohacks’ which are strongly backed by evidence and research.
Sleep optimization is one of them. This involves simply doing the things that help you fall asleep easier, sleep better, and wake up less tired. Simple changes like consistent sleep times, reduced night-time screen use, reduced intake of caffeine especially at night, and stress control can significantly improve one’s sleep quality. Research has shown that this may in turn improve glucose control, control weight ,immune function, and mental clarity [6].
Wearable health devices help monitor heart rate, activity levels, and sleep patterns, allowing for personalized health adjustments thus improving overall health in the long run[7]. Mindfulness and meditation have also been shown to reduce stress and improve emotional regulation [8].
Intermittent fasting, when done safely, can support weight management and metabolic health [4].This is really important.
Let’s all take note!!!
Not all biohacking trends are in actual fact safe for the body. Unregulated supplements, extreme fasting practices , and self experimentation with certain drugs or devices lack scientific backing and can be harmful[2][3]. Individuals with chronic medical conditions should as well consult healthcare professionals before adopting advanced biohacking practices.
To conclude,
Biohacking is not about superhuman abilities. It is all about intentional, evidence-based lifeclass choices that optimise our health and performance. With the right knowledge and caution, biohacking can serve as a very powerful tool for improving energy, mental clarity, fortitude , and long-term well-being.
